Stomach Bug Hinders Georgia Golfers

VALDOSTA, Ga. --- A stomach ailment forced Georgia's Milena Savich off the course just two holes into her round and also hindered Marta Silva Zamora during the Georgia women's golf team's opening round at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge in Valdosta, Ga. on Sunday.

The No. 10-ranked Bulldogs shot 14-over 306 on the par-73 Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, leaving Georgia in a four-way tie for fourth place just three shots off the lead.

"They both have stomach ailments," head coach Kelley Hester said. "Hopefully, no one else gets it. This bug just needs to kind of run its cycle. We're hoping Milena can go tomorrow."

Silva Zamora, the nation's No. 2-ranked individual, became ill on Friday and did not travel with the team that afternoon. She instead drove to Valdosta with assistant coach Margaret Shirley on Saturday and missed the team's practice round.

Shortly after Savich began play on Sunday, she started feeling ill. By the third hole, she had to withdraw from the day's round.

"Milena started feeling bad on No. 1 and and by the No. 3 tee it really hit her," Hester said. "It came on quick with both of them. Marta started feeling rough again today around hole No. 4 so Margaret stayed back and nursed her, which was fortunate since we only had four golfers on the course. She said she felt a little better after she had some fluids."

Silva Zamora still managed to shoot 2-over 75, Georgia's low round of the day. The Bulldogs also received a pair of 76s from Emilie Burger and Abby Johnson and a 79 from Tess Fordham. Georgia's Kiara Hayashida, who is competing as an individual, shot 82.

Overall, Silva Zamora is tied for ninth, Burger and Johnson are tied for 16th, Fordham is tied for 44th and Hayashida is tied for 62nd.

Coastal Carolina's 303 put the Chanticleers atop the team leaderboard. Western Carolina, which is coached by former Georgia All-American Mallory Hetzel, is second at 304, followed by Chattanooga at 305, the Bulldogs, Florida State, Furman and Augusta State all at 306 and ECU, Wisconsin and Georgia State at 309.

Chattanooga's Emma de Groot and Florida State's Hannah Thomson fied 2-under 71s and share the individual lead.

Play continues through Tuesday, with three-hole updates of live scoring available at www.golfstat.com.
