Georgia Golfers Tie For Sixth At Tar Heel

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. --- The No 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a 1-over 289 in the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational at UNC's Finley Golf Course on Sunday. The Bulldogs tied for sixth in the 18-team field at 6-over 870.
Sunday's loop was the Bulldogs' most complete of the tournament, with Georgia all five golfers shooting 75 or better.
"We had a pretty solid day today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We finished in the same position we started the day. Overall, it was a solid outing…tying for sixth in a pretty strong field. I feel like we're improving and headed in the right direction."
Freshman Rocio Sanchez Lobato led Georgia both overall and on Sunday. She carded a 1-under 71 to finish the 54-hole event at 2-under 214 and tie for 11th. Emilie Burger notched her second even-par round of the weekend with a closing 72 and tied for 15th at 217.
The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 1-over 73 from seniors Tess Fordham and Marta Silva Zamora, while dropping Milena Savich's 3-over effort. Overall, Silva Zamora tied for 21st at 219, Savich tied for 37th at 222 and Fordham placed 90th at 234.
No. 3 LSU closed with a 1-under 287 to secure a four-shot win over No. 4 Alabama. LSU completed play at 856, with the Crimson Tide at 860 followed by No. 16 Auburn at 861, No. 5 North Carolina at 862, No. 23 N.C. State at 869, the Bulldogs and No. 14 Tennessee at 870, No. 24 Wake Forest and No. 21 Michigan State at 877 and No. 11 Duke at 879.
Auburn's Marta Sanz secured individual medalist honors at 9-under 207, a shot better than the trio of Augusta James of N.C. State, Brooke Pancake of Alabama and Caroline Powers of Michigan State.
Sanchez Lobato's steady day included 15 pars, a single bogey at No. 9 and birdies at No. 11 and No. 15. Burger was 2-under after birdies at No. 4 and No. 12 - she teed off from No. 4 with the shotgun start - but bogeyed to of her final three holes to finish at even.
Burger and Sanchez Lobato are tied for the team lead in par-or-better rounds this fall with five apiece.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the fall portion of their 2011-12 slate in two weeks when they compete in the Mercedes-Benz Pac 12-SEC Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 21-23.
