Georgia Golfers Start Slow
May 06, 2010 | Women's Golf
COLUMBUS, Ind. --- The No. 14-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded a 24-over, 312 in the opening round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Otter Creek Golf Course on Thursday. The Bulldogs, who are seeded fifth in the 24-team field, are tied for 11th but just three strokes off the cut for the NCAA Championships.
"We certainly didn't position ourselves as well as we would've liked to have, but we didn't kill ourselves either," head coach Kelley Hester said. "It's a hard golf course. There's a lot of rough out there. We talked about needing to hit the fairways and greens and staying out of trouble. We got off to a slow start and might have abandoned that game plan a little big. We'll come out tomorrow and try to stick with our plan and play the way we know we're capable of."
Marta Silva Zamora led Georgia with a 3-over 75, with additional counting scores coming from Milena Savich (77), Emilie Burger (78) and Carolina Andrade (82). The Bulldogs dropped an 83 from Kendall Wright.
Big numbers and a late-day swoon hurt Georgia's tally. The Bulldogs counted five double-bogeys and dropped eight shots on their final four holes of the day.
No. 2 Arizona State grabbed the early lead with a 9-over 297. The Sun Devils and No. 5 Southern Cal were the only two teams to break 300. The Women of Troy are two shots back at 299, followed by No. 8 Purdue at 303, Oregon State and Oklahoma State both at 305, No. 21 New Mexico at 306, No. 23 Florida State at 308, Kent State and Ole Miss at 309, No. 10 Michigan State at 310, the Bulldogs and No. 16 Denver at 312.
Thea Hoffmeister of Purdue and Kendra Little of Oregon share the early individual lead at 2-under 70. Juliana Murcia of Arizona State was the only other golfer to post a red number in the morning.
For Georgia, Silva Zamora is tied for 16th, Savich is tied for 27th, Burger is tied for 36th, Andrade is tied for 79th and Wright is tied for 86th.
On Friday, tee times will be flipped, with the lower 12 seeds playing in the morning and the top dozen squads occupying the afternoon wave. Georgia will again be paired with Michigan State and Denver, teeing off from No. 1 beginning at 1:25 p.m. Live scoring is being updated on a three-hole basis here.
The teams that finish first-eighth at the Regional -- and the top-two individual finishers who are not members of those teams -- will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
