Georgia Golfers Struggle In New Orleans

March 13, 2010 | Women's Golf

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The Georgia women's golf team carded a 19-over 307 in Friday's opening round of the Tiger/Wave Classic at English Turn Golf and Country Club, leaving the Bulldogs in 14th place in the 23-team field.

No 17-ranked Georgia is 14 strokes off the pace of No. 7 Alabama but just seven shots out of fourth.

The Bulldogs' counting rounds included a 74 from Marta Silva Zamora, a 76 from Milena Savich, a 78 from Kendall Wright and a 79 from Carolina Andrade. Georgia dropped Emilie Burger's 81.

"We just had too many big numbers," head coach Kelley Hester said. "It wasn't really poor course management. We just didn't execute the decisions we made very well. It was windy and that was probably a factor. We'll work on those things and come out tomorrow and try to play better, though it's supposed to be even windier tomorrow."

Georgia started the day exceptionally well. Burger and Savich both birdied No. 1 and Wright birdied No. 2 to put the Bulldogs at 3-under through just two holes; however, that good fortune soon turned.

All told, the Bulldogs who supplied counting rounds posted just eight more birdies the rest of the day, while compiling 19 bogeys, three double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Overall, Silva Zamora is tied for 16th, Savich is tied for 34th, Wright is tied for 60th, Andrade is tied for 72nd and Burger is tied for 91st. Alabama's Brooke Pancake and LSU's Tessa Teachman are knotted atop the individual leaderboard after shooting 2-under 70.

Play continues on Saturday and Sunday, with live scoring available via the internet at www.golfstat.com.
