BERLIN --- Former Georgia sprinter Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie advanced to the 200-meter dash semifinals to highlight the fifth of nine days at the IAAF World Track & Field Championships in Berlin on Wednesday.
Ferguson-McKenzie, competing for her native Bahamas, clocked a 22.71 to finish second in her heat as well as second overall to advance to the semifinal round. She will next compete on Thursday.
Both Jennifer Dahlgren (Argentina) and Sultana Frizell (Canada) are scheduled to compete in the women’s hammer on Aug. 20 while Chris Hill (USA) will be throwing in the opening round of the javelin on Aug. 21. Hill is the two-time defending NCAA champion in the javelin and also recently won the USA Championships in the event.
In addition, Patty Sylvester (Grenada), who has already been in the triple jump, will compete in the long jump on Aug. 21
On Aug. 17, Ferguson-McKenzie sped to a sixth-place finish in the 100 after registering a finals time of 11.05.
Reese Hoffa, who was the defending World champion and a former Bulldog All-American, has had the top finish out of the past Georgia athletes thus far. He exploded for an effort of 69 feet, 9 ¾ inches on his sixth throw in the shot put to lock down his fourth-place finish on Aug. 15. Hoffa also had a mark of 69-4.25 in his series, which would have also topped training partner Adam Nelson, who finished fifth (69-3.25).
In the hammer throw finals, Andras Haklits finished seventh after his sixth and final throw traveled 250 feet, 2 inches on Aug. 17. Haklits was 10th at the 2008 Olympic and had finished as high as eighth in the qualifying round at the 2005 World Championships.
Georgia has also had Sylvester compete in the triple jump qualifying (18th-43-4.50) and Levern Spencer (St. Lucia) compete in the high jump qualifying (13th-6-2.25).
