Friday Play At Liz Murphey Classic Cancelled
March 27, 2009 | Women's Golf
Athens, Ga. --- For the first time in the 37-year history of the event, a complete round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic was cancelled on Friday due to inclement weather.
"It's fun to have Georgia firsts, but this certainly isn't one that would've been my choice to be a part of," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We gave it our best try. We tried all day to get out there but Mother Nature wouldn't have it today. We'll do our best tomorrow to get 18 holes in for a 36-hole tournament."
Rain began at approximately 4:00 a.m. on Friday and continued throughout most of the day. There was a brief break early in the afternoon and it appeared that play might be able to start at 3:00. However, the rain began again soon thereafter and continued until the course was ruled unplayable.
The first round is scheduled to begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.
