Madebach finishes 18th in 3000-meter steeplechase semifinals
EUGENE, Ore. --- Former Georgia thrower Lucais MacKay advanced to the finals of the hammer throw during the qualifying round of the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on Monday night.
On the track, senior Sarah Madebach, who captured the last two Southeastern Conference titles in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finished 18th in the steeplechase semifinals.
MacKay, the 2003 NCAA hammer champion, reached a distance of 224 feet, 2 inches on his third and final attempt to grab the 11th spot in the qualifying round. MacKay, who was also a four-time All-American at Georgia, opened the competition with an effort of 220-6.
MacKay will be attempting to advance to his first trip to the Olympics when the hammer finals arrive on Friday at 10 p.m. EDT.
Madebach, who is also the defending SEC cross country champion, finished 10th in the second heat and 18th overall (10:14.010) in the semifinals of the steeplechase. The school record holder in the event did not advance to the steeplechase finals.
Sophomore Chris Hill (javelin) and senior Natalie Picchetti (1500) will compete in the first round of their events later this week. Picchetti will be running in the 1500 quarterfinals on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. and Hill is set to throw in the qualifying round of the javelin on Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Former Georgia track and field team members Reese Hoffa and Hyleas Fountain won titles at the Olympic Trials earlier in the week. Hoffa recorded the world’s second-longest throw this year (72-6.25) to win the shot put and automatically advance to the Olympics. Fountain earned her trip to Beijing after tallying a world-leading 6,667 points in the heptathlon thanks to a flurry of personal-best efforts.
Those who qualify for the U.S. team will compete in the Olympics in Beijing, China, on August 8-24.
Updates and results from the Olympic Trials will be posted at georgiadogs.com.
