April 21, 2008 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. The University of Georgia will play host to the 2008 NCAA Gymnastics Championships this week at Stegeman Coliseum.

The host Gym Dogs earned the No. 1 seed for the meet, which will take place Thursday through Saturday. The first session will be held Thursday at 1 p.m., featuring Florida, LSU, Alabama, Oregon State, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The second session will start at 7 p.m. Thursday and will involve Georgia, Stanford, Utah, Michigan, UCLA and Denver.

The top three teams from each session will advance to the Super Six on Friday at 6 p.m. where the team national champion will be crowned. The individual events competition will take place Saturday at 6 p.m.

“We were excited when we found out we were the No. 1 seed because that was our goal all year,” Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan said. “Our goal was to close out at home as the No. 1 seed. We’re all excited that it’s finally here. There’s been so much buildup, really starting from last year when we won the NCAA title. It seems like we’ve been talking about it for a long time. Now that it’s here, the excitement and the anticipation is even greater because we’re the No. 1 seed.”

The Gym Dogs will open on beam in Thursday’s evening session, followed by a bye, then floor, vault, a bye and bars. Georgia has won the national championship eight times, including 2005, 2006 and 2007.
