Reingold Already Thinking About Coaching

Gymnastics is clearly in Autumn Reingold's blood. The Georgia freshman and all three of her siblings compete in the sport, with Autumn and her older sister, Kayla, already doing so at the collegiate level, younger sister Brooke on her way, and baby brother Hunter heading down that path, as well.
"I actually started in gymnastics before my older sister did, and then just my whole family kept going with it," said Reingold, who grew up mostly in Los Angeles before the family moved to Cypress, Texas, a few years ago.
The Reingold children get their athleticism from their parents, Alida and William, who were professional surfers. Kayla is a sophomore gymnast at Division II Southern Connecticut State, while Brooke is headed to Auburn in the fall. Reingold said she's excited about competing against her sister next season, when the GymDogs and Tigers meet.
"We've always been really close, and everyone knows us as Brooke and Autumn, so it's going to be a little hard seeing her not being for me, because she's going to be for her team. But it's going to be really fun cheering for her, as well," she said. "It's going to be really exciting to see her competing next year."
If her sister does nail a routine in a Georgia-Auburn meet next season, Reingold knows she's going to have to resist the urge to run over and celebrate with her.
"That's definitely going to happen," she said with a laugh.
As Georgia begins NCAA Regional competition Wednesday in Tempe, Ariz., Reingold, who is competing on bars this season, is among many GymDogs to earn SEC and national honors in the past week. She was one of nine Georgia gymnasts to make the All-SEC team, and she was one of three newcomers to make the SEC All-Freshman squad. In addition, Reingold was one of four GymDogs to make the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Regular Season All-America teams, earning second-team honors.
"I actually had no clue until I saw the thing posted on my Instagram," Reingold said of making the All-SEC team that was announced on March 25.
Reingold has competed in bars in every meet this season, with a high score of 9.9.75 during the Elevate the Stage meet in Huntsville, Ala., on March 8. She has won four bars event titles, scored a 9.900 or better five times, and has scored a 9.850 or better in each of her last eight meets. Looking back at her freshman season, Reingold said the adjustment to college was "a little bit hectic," but the older GymDogs have been a great help.
"Overall, it's been really exciting and a great step in my life and this chapter at college," she said. "In the beginning, I wasn't as confident in myself with my routines and stuff, but as we started competing more and more and doing all the inter-squads during the preseason, I started finding confidence and the understanding that I can do it, and the whole team is backing me up.
"It was just like: Be confident in yourself, and just go out and do what you know how to do."
Reingold said she tries not to think too much before her bars routines, but she does always say one thing to herself.
"I go: 'Do it for your team. They have your back, so you should have theirs.' There are other things, like, 'Hit your handstands,' but I don't want to overthink anything, either, because we've done so many numbers that we're fully prepared to do what what we're doing, so why overthink what we're going to do now?'" she said.
Reingold arrived at Georgia thinking she wanted to major in Criminal Justice, but now she's in Communications. She's also thinking of a minor in Coaching, with the plan of being a coach one day.
"I really like working with kids and other athletes. And I've had so many different coaches over the years, I know what I would want to give to an athlete, and I know what I've taken in and what I've not taken in from different coaches," she said.
With that in mind, Reingold does watch Georgia's coaches in action, whether it's in training or other areas of the job.
"Every time someone is dealing with something, I kind of watch, just to see how they take that in and help the athlete out. I'm not saying anything, and I'm not being nosy, I'm just kind of watching to see what's going on and how they deal with something," she said.
In her first collegiate meet, at Georgia's season opener at Ohio State on Jan. 10, Reingold scored a 9.85. It was a strong start despite some early nerves, she said. It was also her first experience at a real away meet, which was informative.
"One thing that I thought about was, yes, it was an away meet, but I use that now going to every away meet. I'm like, the fans are cheering for me, even if they're not," she said. "If they're screaming for their team because they did good, I'm like, Oh, they're actually cheering for me."
With that approach, she's given everyone a lot to cheer about this season. And, hopefully, there are a lot more cheers to come.
