Torrence Named To NCAA Silver Anniversary Indoor Team

May 01, 2007 | Track & Field

ATHENS, Ga. --- Former University of Georgia sprinter Gwen Torrence has been named to the NCAA Division I Silver Anniversary Indoor Team, according to an announcement by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Torrence is one of 19 individuals, three relay teams and two coaches who were named to the team to honor the 25th year of women competing at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships.

"It is obvious when you look at Gwen's accomplishments that she is one of the greatest female track and field athletes in Georgia, Southeastern Conference, NCAA and American history. The Silver Anniversary team would be incomplete without the name of Gwen Torrence," said Georgia head track and field coach Wayne Norton. "Those affiliated with UGA track and field, past and present, should be very proud of this honor that Gwen has earned."

Torrence, a native of Atlanta, is a three-time Olympic gold medalist and was an eight-time SEC champion while competing for Georgia from 1983-87. After earning 12 All-American certificates in Athens, Torrence competed at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain and the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and tallied a total of five medals.

While attending Georgia, Torrence captured four NCAA individual titles (1986 indoor 55, 1987 indoor 55, outdoor 100 and 200) and set a pair of school records in the 55 (6.56) and the outdoor 400 (51.60). Torrence's 6.56 at the 1987 NCAA Indoor Championships is still a national meet record.

"One of the most spectacular achievements in Gwen's career is her personal best in the 55-meter dash and I encourage everyone to do some research on this," Norton said. "She ran 6.56 seconds in that event. Some of the best collegiate sprinters since 1987 have run between 6.65 and 6.78 for the 55-meter and 60-yard dash. Gwen's best is far superior to some great sprinters who ran after she did."

Torrence, who was ranked No. 1 in the world twice in the 100 and three times in the 200, was elected to the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2002.
