Georgiadogs.com Asks: 'When Did You Begin Gymnastics?'

October 04, 2007 | Gymnastics

Georgiadogs.com asked all the current Georgia Gym Dogs how their gymnastics careers began...

Audrey Bowers- I started gymnastics at age 5 because I wanted to be just like my sister. I would go to watch her with my mom and finally, after always talking about it, my mom let me begin!

Cassidy McComb- I started gymnastics when I was about 5 years old. In my house, we had a long entry way from our front door to the back door and I would always run and cartwheel from one end to the other, so my parents put me in a gym/dance combo class!

Courtney Kupets- I started gymnastics when I was three years old. The reason I began was because it was the age which I wanted to do everything like my older sister, Ashley, and she was a gymnast so that's what I wanted to be. Thanks Ash!!!

Grace Taylor- I started gymnastics right around the time I turned 4 years old. Gymnastics was actually a prescription from my pediatrician. My parents were concerned about how much energy I had, and the doctor thought gymnastics would be a really constructive and safe way to use some of that energy up.

Hilary Mauro-I started gymnastics when I was 4. My mom was a coach and actually was not going to put me in gymnastics. I would go to work with her and watch and copy on the mats. I started teaching myself and was flipping everywhere! That's when she decided she better put me in gymnastics:)

Lauren Johnson- I started gymnastics after watching my younger sisters (who were six years old) dominate their level 2 competition. I was taking dance classes at the time but realized that in gymnastics, I could win a medal. So I joined the training team at my sisters' gym when I was eight and jumped to level 5 when I was nine. It took an entire year of competition before I even won a medal, but I stuck with it! Guess where the hundreds of competition medals are now? They're in a small box under my bed...haha. Although the medals aren't a big deal anymore, I'd never trade the fun and memories I had along the way.

Lauren Sessler- I started when I was five, and I begged my mom to put me in it because I watched it on TV in the Olympics and was hooked after that.

Marcia Newby - I started gymnastics when I was six (1994). I got introduced to gymnastics by my neighbor. The gym was offering a discount to members who brought new people to try out gymnastics. My neighbor brought me and I just loved it ever since!

Megan Dowlen
- I started gymnastics when I was 6 years old. I got invited to a birthday party of a girl who was in my first grade class. Her party was at the gym she had been going to. After the party, I told my parents I wanted to go back!

Paige Burns- I started doing the little tumble tots classes when I was about 3 years old. However, I didn't really start doing gymnastics until I was like 5 or 6. My mom was the captain of her cheerleading squad in high school; she decided to sign me up for gymnastics so that by the time I got to high school I'd be a really good cheerleader... Unfortunately, things didn't turn out quite the way she had hoped... they turned out better, because here I am! :)
