Georgia Holds Lead At NCAA Fall Preview

September 23, 2006 | Women's Golf

Daytona Beach, Fla. -- The Georgia women's golf team carded a 7-over 295 in Saturday's second round of the Golf Daytona Beach Fall Preview and remained atop the leaderboard.

The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs are at 584 entering Sunday's final round, four shots better than No. 7 Auburn. No. 1 Duke is third at 594, followed a by a three-way tie for fourth between No. 9 Virginia, No. 2 Arizona State and No. 11 Wake Forest at 598.

"We played well today," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "We got off to a bad start, but I was proud of the way we hung there. We lead the best teams in the country going into the last day of the tournament. You can't ask for more than that."

Fourteen of the nation's top 15 ranked teams are competing in the preview, which is being contested on the LPGA International's Legends Course, the same layout that will host the 2007 NCAA Championships next May.

Sophomore Mallory Hetzel led Georgia on Saturday with an even-par 72. The Dogs also counted a pair of 73s by Garrett Phillips and Taylor Leon and a 77 from senior Whitney Wade. Freshman Carolina Andrade carded an 80.

Overall, Hetzel and Leon are both tied for third individually at 1-over 145. They are three shots off the pace of Tennessee's Nicole Smith. Wade is tied for 29th at 150, while Andrade and Phillips are tied for 33rd at 151.

After turning at 5-over, Georgia played the back side of the course -- generally regarded as the tougher half of the loop -- at 2-over. Phillips birdied three of the last four holes and Hetzel posted a birdie on No. 16 to give the Dogs a late surge.

"Garrett finishing so strong was big and Mallory's birdie was very important too," McCorkle said. "I think our team is getting comfortable with who they are, and I think that's important."
