Browns Summit, N.C. --- The No. 6-ranked Georgia women's golf team surged atop the team and individual leaderboards during the second round of the Bryan National Collegiate here on Saturday.

The Bulldogs' 3-over 291 pushed them from fourth to first in the team field, two strokes ahead of top-ranked Duke with 18 holes to play. Freshman Taylor Leon's 1-under 71 put her at even-par 144 and tied with Duke's Elizabeth Janagelo and Tennessee's Nicole Smith for first in the individual competition.

Freshman Mallory Hetzel actually posted Georgia's low round of the day with a 2-under 70. She is just one shot off the individual lead.

The Bulldogs also counted a 74 from Whitney Wade and a 76 from Jackie Beers. Alina Lee posted a 77. Overall, Beers and Wade are tied for 18th at 151 and Lee is tied for 39th at 154.

"The girls talked in the van on the way to the course this morning about being determined and playing well today," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "It was the first time all year that they've challenged each other, and I think that was a turning point for this team. We're just trying to take care of what we can and go out and play a solid round of golf tomorrow. Hopefully, we'll continue to play well and be consistent throughout the day and play good enough to come out on top."

Hetzel bounced back from a bogey at No. 2 with birdies at No. 4, No. 6 and No. 8 to turn at 2-under. She mixed a bogey at No. 14 with a birdie at No. 15 on the back nine.
