Georgia Remains Second At SEC Women's Golf

FRANKLIN, Tenn. --- Paced by a 4-under 68 from freshman Taylor Leon, the No. 4-ranked Georgia women's golf team carded a 3-under 285 in Saturday's second round of the SEC Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Bulldogs and Leon enter the final round in second place on the team and individual leaderboards. Georgia is four shots off the pace of No. 5 Auburn, while Leon is two strokes behind the Tigers' Maria Martinez.
Saturday's effort was the Bulldogs' second-best team loop of the 2005-06 season; however, Auburn actually extended its lead from one stroke to four with a 6-under 282. Leon's round pushed her from a tie for 10th after the first round to second place overall.
"I'm just so pleased with the way we played today," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "Four strokes is nothing in team golf. I like our position, mainly because we're playing so well right now. But we have to go out and make some putts. We're playing as well now as we've played all season, and hopefully, things will work out for us tomorrow."
The second round was a constant nip-and-tuck battle with Georgia, Auburn, No. 11 Tennessee and No. 15 Vanderbilt trading the lead throughout the day. The Tigers played the final four holes at 7-under to surge atop the leaderboard. The Bulldogs played the same stretch at 4-under themselves but amazingly lost three strokes in the process.
All four teams enter Sunday's final round within striking distance. The Tigers are at 582, the Bulldogs are at 586, the Lady Volunteers are at 588 and the homestanding Commodores are at 590. Florida is fifth at 599.
In addition to Leon's career-best 68, freshman Mallory Hetzel's 2-under 70, freshman Alina Lee's 73 and junior Whitney Wade's 74 rounded out Georgia's counting tallies. Senior Kelly Froelich carded a second-staight 75.
