Georgia Softball Clinches 2005 SEC Championship

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 11-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (47-11, 25-3) clinched the 2005 Southeastern Conference championship on Saturday after earning a 5-2 win over the No. 7-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (49-10, 19-6) in front of 1,362 fans at the UGA Soccer/Softball Complex. Play was halted in the bottom of the fifth inning in the nightcap due to heavy rain. Game two will resume tomorrow at noon with Alabama leading 4-2. First pitch for game three is slated for 1 p.m. EDT.
Georgia has now captured conference titles in two out of its last three seasons.
Michelle Green (22-3) earned the game one win after scattering two runs in 6.1 innings of work, striking out seven. Carroll notched her fifth save of the season after recording the final two outs in the seventh inning.
Jessica Gilmore and Megan McAllister each tallied two-RBI hits in the win.
The Bulldogs scored three runs in first inning of game one to take a 3-0 lead. Georgia put runners on first and second base after Katie Lewis and Kim Wendland drew back-to-back one out walks. Jessica Doucette singled home Lewis on a two-out RBI single to right field. Courtney Knight drew a walk to load the bases. Gilmore plated Wendland and Doucette with a two-RBI single to left center field.
Georgia added two runs in the second inning to extend its lead to 5-0. Kelsey Todd reached first base on an error to lead off the frame and would later advance to second after Lewis reached on an error. McAllister scored Todd and Lewis with a two-out double to center field.
