AUBURN, Ala. --- The No. 2-ranked Georgia women's golf team is tied for second place after firing a 6-over 294 in the first round of The Derby Invitational at the Auburn University Club on Friday.

Freshman Taylor Leon led Georgia with a 71, one of just three under-par rounds on the day. She and Duke's Elizabeth Janangelo are tied for second, two shots behind Auburn's Maria Martinez.

The Bulldogs also counted a pair of 74s from junior Whitney Wade and freshman Alina Lee, as well as a 75, the score posted by both senior Jackie Beers and freshman Mallory Hetzel.

"I'm very pleased," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "We played very solid throughout the lineup. No one played poorly today and that helped us get off to a good start."

The Bulldogs' tally was three strokes off the pace of No. 7 Auburn and left Georgia tied with top-ranked Duke. No. 13 Virginia and No. 14 Tennessee are tied for fourth at 297, followed by Ole Miss at 300, South Carolina at 301, No. 19 Florida at 302, Florida State at 303 and LSU and Texas at 308.

"We've got Auburn on their home course and Duke is the top-ranked team in the country," McCorkle said. "The bottom line is that we need to eliminate and mistakes we've made to this point and play our best golf if we want to win this tournament. We know that, and I'm think everyone is excited to get back out there and try to do just that tomorrow."
