Competing in the NCAA Championships - and doing so with great success - is nothing new for the Georgia Lady Bulldogs.
In 25 seasons of competition since UGA began recognizing women's golf as an intercollegiate sport in 1978-79, the Lady Bulldogs have posted 15 top-10 finishes at the national championships.
Georgia's lineup, which features one freshman, three sophomores and one junior, enters this week ranked eighth by Golfweek coming out of the West Region. The Lady Dogs placed fifth out West as No. 2-ranked UCLA walked away with the title. Five of the top eight ranked teams in this week's national championships are out of the Stanford, Calif. regional.
"We've struggled of late, but to play well at Stanford was a confidence builder," said McCorkle. "With school out we'll work extremely hard this week and be ready to go."
This will be Georgia's second trip in the 2003-04 season to the Lake Course at Grand National. At the NCAA Fall Preview in September Georgia finished 14th with only Natalia Nicholls breaking 80 in all three rounds for the Lady Dogs.
"We had a young lineup with a lot of players playing in their first tournament. We did not play well, but we're a totally different team now. We got a good look at the course, and that should help us this time around," McCorkle said.
Georgia vs. The Championships Field
The Lady Dogs have competed against all but two of the 24 teams in the NCAA Championships field during 2003-04. Georgia is near .500 at 32-34 versus those squads, including one win in the Hooters National Match Play. Only Baylor and Texas A&M, both out of the Central Region, have not competed in a tournament with Georgia this year.
