One of the longest-running events in women's collegiate athletics returns to the University of Georgia Golf Course next weekend when Georgia hosts the 32nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday-Sunday.

The LMCC originally began in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational and was then contested as the Women's Southern Intercollegiate Championships from 1977-94. In 1995, the tournament was again renamed in honor of Liz Murphey. Murphey served as head coach from the time women's golf became an intercollegiate sport at UGA (1978) to 1986 and led the Lady Dogs to 21 team and 18 individual titles. She also was Georgia's Senior Woman Administrator for 18 years before retiring in 1996.

Many of the nation's top teams will be in Athens for the Classic, including five of the top-10 teams in the most recent edition of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index -- No. 1 Duke, No. 5 Georgia, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 8 Auburn and No. 10 Oklahoma State. Rounding out the field are three more top-25 teams -- No. 18 Wake Forest, No. 21 Tennessee and No. 23 Furman -- as well as Alabama, Arkansas, East Carolina, Florida State, Kent State, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and South Carolina.

"I think the quality of our field says a lot about the tradition of the Liz Murphey and playing here in Athens," Todd McCorkle said. "We always have quality teams wanting to come to Athens, which is great for our program. Obviously, we would like to win at home, especially since we're playing a course we're very familiar with and should have an advantage there."
