The Georgia women's golf team will begin defense of its 2001 national title at this weekend's NCAA East Regional in Baton Rouge, La. The Lady Bulldogs will be among 21 teams vying for eight slots into the NCAA Championships.

"We're excited about being in the East," head coach Todd McCorkle said. "We feel like the East Regional is the toughest in the nation. I think we're playing our best golf of the year at this time, and we're looking forward to the competition."

The Regional will be hosted by LSU on Thursday-Saturday (May 9-11) at University Club. The Lady Bulldogs, who captured their first-ever NCAA team title last spring, are the No. 3 seed in the East behind top-ranked Auburn and No. 2 Duke. Also included in the field in successive order of seeding are: Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Florida, South Carolina, Wake Forest, Furman, North Carolina, LSU, Tulane, Mississippi State, Memphis, Texas A&M, Central Florida, Alabama, South Florida, North Carolina State, Yale and Jackson State.

The top-eight teams from the East, Central (East Lansing, Mich.) and West (Stanford, Calif.) Regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash. In addition, the top two individuals from each Regional who are not members of advancing teams will earn spots in the NCAA Championships field.

The East appears to be the most competitive of the three regions. Six of the top-12 teams in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Index are included, as is South Carolina, which is ranked No. 21 but captured the 2002 SEC Championship.
