Athens, Ga. --- Laura Henderson-Matthews, a four-time All-SEC performer who helped Georgia capture the 2001 NCAA Women's Golf Championship last May, has been named assistant coach for the Lady Bulldogs, head coach Todd McCorkle announced Wednesday.
Since last summer, Henderson-Matthews had served as an undergraduate assistant coach while she completed her degree requirements. She married Robert Matthews, a former Georgia football player, in January 2002.
"As a student-assistant, Laura did a wonderful job, and we feel very fortunate to have her working full-time for us now," McCorkle said. "She brings many assets to our program, especially being a graduate of the University of Georgia and a great player here."
Henderson-Matthews completed her career as one of the most consistent performers in the program's history. She is one of only three Lady Bulldogs to earn All-SEC honors four times, garnering first-team recognition in both 1999 and 2000 as well as second-team status in 1998 and 2001. Henderson-Matthews represented UGA in every tournament during her career, becoming only the sixth golfer in Georgia history to join the "100 Percent Club."
"I feel like I've been here for eight months so it's really not anything new," Henderson-Matthews said. "It is exciting to finally officially be full-time."
In 45 collegiate events, Henderson-Matthews posted 30 top-20 and 19 top-10 finishes. She finished her career with a 75.47 stroke average for 131 rounds. The Essex, Ontario native played some of her best golf during the post-season, finishing in the top-20 at the SEC Championships four times. She also placed among the top-13 individuals at the NCAA East Regional and the NCAA Championships during both her junior and senior seasons.
