Kalua Lumpur, Malaysia --- Georgia assistant golf coach Laura Matthews fired an even-par 73 in the first round of the 2002 World Amateur Team Championships at the Saujana Golf & Country Club on Wednesday and is among seven golfers tied for 17th.
Matthews, a native of Essex, Ontario, led Canada to a team score of 4-over 150 in the first round.
Matthews bogeyed No. 2 before a birdie on No. 3 brought her back to par. She then bogeyed No. 4 and No. 9 to slip to 2-over at the turn. Matthews played the back half of the course at 2-under with birdies at No. 11 and No. 15 to finish at even par.
Each team, which has two or three players, plays 18 holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72 holes) total is the team's score for the championship.
Naree and Aree Song Wongluekiet, identical 16-year-old twins, shot 5-under-par 68 and 2-under-par 71, respectively, to pace Thailand to a four-stroke lead in the team field. Thailand leads the U.S. by four strokes. Canada is tied for 15th, 11 strokes off the lead.
Matthews, a three-time runner-up at the Canadian Ladies Amateur, was a four-time All-SEC performer for Georgia's Lady Bulldogs from 1998-2001 and helped Georgia capture the 2001 NCAA Championship.
