No. 3 Bulldogs Set To Face Texas In CWS Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 3 national seed Georgia will open its College World Series here Saturday against No. 6 Texas at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. 

*Georgia (51-12, 23-7 SEC), ranked as high as No. 1 nationally, won the Southeastern Conference regular season title with a 23-7 mark as well as the SEC Tournament title by going 3-0 and then after rolling through its Regional, it swept No. 14 Mississippi State in a Super Regional in Athens. 

*The Bulldogs are in their third season under Ike Cousins head coach Wes Johnson and have been a national top eight seed each year in his tenure. The Bulldogs did not face the Longhorns (45-13) during the regular season.

*The Bulldogs are playing in their seventh CWS in school history and first since reaching the Finals in 2008.

*Georgia leads the NCAA with a school record 174 Home Runs and a .629 Slugging Percentage and fourth in Scoring at 9.4 runs/game. The Bulldogs have an SEC-best .326 Batting Average that ranks fourth nationally. Also, Georgia has a .982 Fielding Percentage, which is 10th nationally.  

*Georgia has won 19 of its past 20 games, and its 51 wins ranks as the second most in school history, trailing only the 1990 national championship that finished 52-19.  Oklahoma and Alabama round out Georgia's side of the bracket. Those two teams meet in the first game Saturday. The winners game will be Monday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN while the losers will square off at 2 p.m. ET Monday on ESPN.

*Junior All-America catcher Daniel Jackson (.396-31-86, 26 SB) ranks in the top five nationally in five offensive categories. On Friday, he claimed the 2026 Dick Howser Trophy as the top player in college baseball. He is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award, the Buster Posey Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award and the Bobby Bragan Slugger Award. Jackson was named the SEC Player of the Year and 1st Team All-SEC by the league coaches. Also, he was named the SEC Tournament MVP as well as to the All-Tournament team as the Bulldogs captured their first-ever SEC Tournament title.

*The Bulldogs will start right-hander Joey Volchko (10-2, 4.07 ERA). Georgia's team ERA is 4.92 with 653 strikeouts and 273 walks in 538.1 innings. Opponents are hitting .242 against the Bulldogs. UT will be starting sophomore left-hander Dylan Volantis (10-1, 2.03 ERA).
