SEC Champion Georgia Earns No. 3 NCAA National Seed, Faces LIU Friday

May 25, 2026 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia received the No. 3 national seed to the 2026 NCAA Baseball Championships and will be the top seed in the Athens (Ga.) Regional, May 29-June 1, it was announced Monday on ESPN.

Georgia will be making is 16th NCAA Regional appearance, and the No. 3 national seed is the best in program history. The Bulldogs (46-12) will open against the Long Island Sharks (30-20), winners of the Northeast Conference, on Friday at 7 p.m. at Foley Field. The game will be available on the SEC Network and on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network. Friday's first game of the Athens Regional will feature No. 2 seed Boston College (36-21) versus No. 3 seed Liberty (41-19) at 2 p.m. (ESPN+).

The Bulldogs are 56-38 all-time in 15 NCAA Tournaments including 37-22 in NCAA Regionals. Georgia has won seven regional titles, four super regional championships and made six trips to the College World Series. The Bulldogs claimed the 1990 national title and reached the CWS Finals in 2008. Georgia will be playing host to a regional for the third consecutive year and ninth time in school history. Georgia is a top eight national seed for the third straight season under Ike Cousins head coach Wes Johnson and the eighth time in school history.

"Long Island is a really good program," said Johnson. "A couple years ago, they were leading North Carolina late in the game, and North Carolina walked them off with a grand slam if I remember correctly. They're a good quality club. They're not going to be intimidated coming here. Offensively, they can hit, and they really run. I think they've got 139 or 140 stolen bases. Their guys will throw strikes and attack the strike zone. Moving through the regional, Boston College had a good year in the ACC. Liberty probably has one of the best number ones in the country. Their Friday night guy would be a number one in our league as well. Their club has players with 18 to 20 home runs, so again, another quality club with a high RPI. It's going to be a good regional."

In the series history versus the field, Georgia is 0-1 against LIU, 8-2 against Liberty and never faced Boston College. During the 2019 regular season, the Sharks beat the Bulldogs 1-0 in Athens. Georgia last faced Liberty in 2013, and the Bulldogs claimed a series in Athens two games to one.

In 2026, there are 16 four-team regionals that comprise the field of 64. The NCAA Tournament field, the top 16 seeds and the bracket all were released Monday on ESPN2. If a team wins its regional, it advances to a Super Regional, June 5-7 or 6-8. The winner of the Athens regional will face the winner of the Mississippi State regional as the Bulldogs of Starkville are the No. 14 national seed. The MSU regional features the host Bulldogs (40-17), Cincinnati (37-20), Louisiana (39-23) and Lipscomb (29-24).

In Super Regional action, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. (June 12-22). The super regional hosts will be announced the morning of June 1s.
