No. 9 Georgia Sweeps Missouri

May 04, 2025 | Baseball

COLUMBIA, M.O. – Slate Alford's two-run home run in the ninth inning coupled with 7.1 innings by Leighton Finley led ninth-ranked Georgia to a 4-2 win Sunday, completing an SEC sweep of Missouri at Taylor Stadium.

Fast Facts

• Junior Leighton Finley pitched a career-high 7.1 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with eight strikeouts but got a no decision when the Tigers tied the game in the eighth. Also, it was the longest outing by a Bulldog this year. Alton Davis II (5-0) picked up the win in relief while Zach Harris got his second save.

• Down 1-0, senior Robbie Burnett delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning. He leads the team with 61 RBI.

• Through the first four innings, Georgia was 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

• Senior Slate Alford extended his on-base streak to 33 games with a double in the first inning. He has reached base safely in 49 of 50 games this year. Alford's two-run home run in the top of the ninth was the difference. It was his 15th home run of the year.

• Georgia posted its second SEC road sweep of the season and has won six of its eight SEC series.

Key Quotes

Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Wes Johnson

On the game

"We did what we needed to do today. You look at the start Leighton Finley gave us, and the bullpen came through. Slate Alford had a good day at the plate with three hits, obviously the big two-run home run but also had a couple doubles. We had some other hits in the game that put some pressure on them, and they were able to get out of some jams. Zach (Harris) has been very effective. He threw on back-to-back days, and he was very effective with three pitches. He was hitting 97 (miles per hour) today. Everyone in the bullpen has taken to their roles, and I'm proud of our pitching staff this weekend."
