Throwers Score Big Points On Day One Of SEC Outdoor Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. --- Five Georgia throwers combined for 38 total points as the Georgia track & field teams opened the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championships in impressive fashion on Thursday. After one day of competition, the Georgia women rank first with 30 points while the men sit in a tie for fourth with eight points.

The Bulldogs will compete in the second day of the SEC Outdoor Championships on Friday, with Jordan Fick and Maximus Tucker opening the day in the decathlon's 110m hurdles at 11 a.m. followed by Ella Rush in the heptathlon's long jump at 11:45 a.m. Danah Nembhard and T'oni Birden will kick off the open field events in the women's long jump at 1 p.m. while Jayden Keys will compete in the men's 110m hurdles on the track at 2:15 p.m.

- The trio of Lianna Davidson, Manuela Rotundo, and Erin McMeniman all earned top-five finishes in the women's javelin throw to bring in a combined 20 points for the Bulldogs. Davidson led the way with her third-straight SEC title in the event, logging a top throw of 58.74 meters/192 feet, 8 inches to win in Lexington. Freshman Manuela Rotundo joined her on the podium, earning a bronze medal with a mark of 57.06m/187-2 in her first SEC meet. Erin McMeniman also scored points for Georgia with her mark of 52.25m/171-5, which was good for fifth place.
- Stephanie Ratcliffe recorded a monster throw of 70.72m/232-0 to win the hammer throw title to open the day for the Bulldogs. The throw vaulted her to second in the NCAA in the event this season while improving her position as the No. 2 performer in program history.
- Moustafa Alsherif added to the Bulldogs' success in the javelin on Thursday, coming away with a silver medal after recording a throw of 76.94m/252-5 on his first attempt. With his performance, all five Georgia throwers competing on Thursday scored points with four finishing on the podium.
- Michelle Smith clocked a blazing 55.17 in the 400m hurdles, winning her heat and placing third overall to advance to Saturday's final. The freshman is competing in her first SEC outdoor meet.
- Kaila Jackson and Brody Buffington each punched their tickets to the 200m finals, both finishing first in their respective heats and sixth overall to qualify for Saturday's finals. Jackson clocked a 22.70 to earn her auto-qualification in the women's race, and Buffington became the No. 4 performer in program history with his personal-best time of 20.25.
- The multi-event athletes put on impressive performances on day one of their respective events as the Bulldog trio of Maximus Tucker, Ella Rush, and Jordan Fick all finished Thursday ranked in the top four. Tucker set personal bests in four of his five decathlon events, capped off by a win in the 400m (47.70) to finish the day in second place. Fick placed second in both the 100m (10.93) and 400m (48.48) while adding an outdoor personal best in the shot put (12.34m/40-6) to sit in fourth after five disciplines. In the heptathlon, Rush posted personal bests in three of her four events on the day, including a pair of third-place finishes (high jump – 1.68m/5-6; shot put – 11.88m/38-11.75) to end the day in third place.
