No. 2-seed Bulldogs Sweep No. 3-seed Oklahoma, Advance to SEC Tournament Final

April 19, 2025 | Women's Tennis

AUBURN, Ala. — The No. 2 ranked and 2-seeded Georgia women's tennis team (22-3, 13-2 SEC) will play for an SEC Tournament three-peat after defeating No. 5-ranked and 3-seeded Oklahoma (19-6, 11-4 SEC), 4-0, in the 2025 SEC Tournament semifinal at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Saturday.

Fast Facts
  • The Bulldogs have now advanced to their sixth-consecutive SEC Tournament Final dating back to the 2019 season (2020 SEC Tournament cancelled due to COVID-19). Georgia now sit one victory away from an SEC Tournament three-peat and a fourth conference tournament title in the last five seasons.
  • The victory marks the Bulldogs' 15th ranked win of the season as well as the third against a top 5 ranked foe.
  • Georgia remains perfect all-time at 6-0 against Oklahoma, knocking off the Sooners for a second time this season as both came via sweep.
  • Georgia earned the doubles point to open the afternoon as the #74 tandem of Guillermina Grant and Anastasiia Lopata struck first with a 6-1 win over Salakthip Ounmuang and Chloe Noel on court two. Despite trailing early, the #2 pairing of Dasha Vidmanova and Mell Reasco rallied back to defeat #36 Julia Garcia Ruiz and Alina Shcherbinina, 6-2, on court one to put the Bulldogs on the board.
  • In singles, #54 Aysegul Mert dominated from start to finish as she cruised past #66 Emma Staker, 6-1, 6-2, on court four to double Georgia's lead to 2-0.
  • Sofia Rojas produced a strong performance at the tail end of the lineup as she defeated Gloriana Nahum, 6-3, 6-3, on court six to put the Bulldogs one point away from the win.
  • Moments later, #85 Grant outlasted a second-set comeback bid from Ava Catanzarite, pulling through in a deep tiebreaker battle to secure a 6-0, 7-6(8) victory for the clinch and the sweep.
  • Georgia have now advanced to the SEC Tournament title match in each of the three editions hosted by Auburn, coming up short 5-4 against top-seeded Florida in 1995 before coming out victorious, 4-3, in a rematch against 1-seed Florida in 2008.
  • A win on Sunday would secure the second SEC Tournament three-peat in program history after winning three in a row from 2007-09.
  • As a 2-seed in SEC Tournament history, Georgia has advanced to the title match seven times while winning it twice.
