Honor goes to top freshman in D-I hoops
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia's Asa Newell has been named a finalist for the 2025 Kyle Macy Award, which is given to the top freshman in Division I basketball.
Newell has enjoyed a standout season with the Bulldogs. He is Georgia's leading scorer and rebounder at 15.1 ppg and 6.5 rpg, respectfully. He has scored in double figures in 28 of 31 games, with four 20-point outings. Newell has notched six double-digit rebounding counts, leading to six double-doubles. Overall, Newell has led Georgia in points 19 times and in rebounds in 14 contests.
Earlier this week, Newell was named to the SEC's All-Freshman team in balloting of league coaches. He was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times, matching Anthony Edwards' record for the most FOTW honors by a Bulldog. Newell also was listed as a top-10 candidate for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award as the top center in college basketball.
Georgia opens play in the SEC Tournament on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs will face Oklahoma at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
Kyle Macy was a three-time All-America and three-time All-SEC honoree, playing at Purdue as a freshman before transferring to Kentucky. He was a member of Kentucky's 1978 National Championship team and as a senior in 1980 became the first Kentucky player to be named consensus SEC Player of the Year.
The recipient of the Macy Award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two senior staff members of collegeinsider.com. The 2025 award will be announced in San Antonio, TX, site of the men's Division I Basketball Championship.
Newell is one of six SEC players among the Macy Award's 25 finalists along with Jeremiah Fears (Oklahoma), Boogie Fland (Arkansas), Tre Johnson (Texas), Tahaad Pettiford (Auburn) and Labaron Philon (Alabama).
