No. 6 Georgia Beats Ga. State To Extend Winning Streak

February 26, 2025 | Baseball

ATLANTA, Ga. –  A pair of home runs and another impressive performance by the bullpen led sixth-ranked Georgia to its sixth straight victory Wednesday, beating Georgia State 7-3 at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Fast Facts
• The Bulldog bullpen provided 7.2 scoreless innings with former Panther Davis Chastain picking up the victory to move his record to 2-0. Georgia employed eight pitchers on the day.
• Georgia (9-1) fell behind 3-0 and had one hit through five innings before tying the game in the sixth on a two-run home run by junior Slate Alford and an RBI-groundout from Henry Hunter.
• Alford extended his hitting streak to six games with his second home run as it went 403 feet with an exit velocity of 104 miles per hour (MPH). He notched his third RBI on the day on a groundout in the seventh for a 4-3 lead.
• Sophomore Tre Phelps smashed his second home run in as many games, launching a two-out, two-run shot as part of a four-run outburst in the seventh for a 7-3 advantage. It went an estimated 374 feet at 101 MPH.
• Redshirt freshman Paul Farley inherited a 3-0 deficit in the second, and after a pair of walks loaded the bases, he got Michael Maginnis to hit into an inning-ending double play. The rest of the bullpen that held the Panthers to one hit over the final 7.2 innings included Brian Zeldin, Tyler McLoughlin, Chastain, DJ Radtke, Justin Byrd and Brian Curley.

Key Quotes
Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Wes Johnson
On the game
"We got behind in the scoreboard, but we know it's a long game. We told everyone don't panic. For the hitters, we told them just stay in your approach and you'll get some pitches and obviously Slate (Alford) and Tre (Phelps) got a good swing on a couple. Davis (Chastain) was locked in, and he was itching to get out there, and got three outs after we took the lead. Overall, our bullpen did another tremendous job, attacking the strike zone and keeping them off the scoreboard."
