The first half ended Sunday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum in the best way possible for the Georgia women's basketball team. As the clock wound down, Trinity Turner drove down the right side of the lane and laid the ball in off the glass just ahead of the buzzer.

The sophomore guard's bucket sent the Lady Bulldogs into the locker room on an 18-1 run and with a 34-20 lead over rival Georgia Tech. Turner, a dynamic player who can do a lot of damage quickly, scored 12 of Georgia's points in the big surge over the final 5:20 to close the half.

"It just felt good to see one go in," Turner said following the Lady Bulldogs' 87-59 win, which lifted Georgia's record to 7-0. "After that, I was really just looking for my shot a little more, so that was really good."

Turner finished with 18 points, one of four Georgia players with 16 or more. The Lady Bulldogs' leading scorer Sunday was sophomore guard Dani Carnegie, a transfer from Georgia Tech, who scored a game-high 23 against her former team. Another transfer guard, junior Rylie Theuerkauf, who came from Wake Forest, also scored 18. Sophomore forward Mia Woolfolk was Georgia's force in the paint, scoring 16 points and grabbing a team-high six rebounds.

Last season, Turner was Georgia's leading scorer with 12.2 points per game. She also averaged 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 32 games, with 26 starts, and made the SEC All-Freshman Team. Through seven games this season, the 5-foot-6 Turner, from Orlando, Fla., is averaging 12.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

Perhaps most notable among Turner's stats is her sharp increase in field-goal percentage. She hit 34.3% of her shots last season, and that number is up to 46.6% after seven games. Against Tech, Turner was 8 of 18 from the field and 2 of 4 from 3-point range.

Georgia coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson said Turner has spent a lot of time in the gym with associate head coach Tahnee Balerio working on her shot.

"She's just super competitive," Coach ABE said of Turner. "I think Dani, her and Mia are super competitive, and Trinity just wants to do well all the time. And today, she wanted to do well for Dani, for sure."

Not only was Carnegie playing against her former team, Tech was doing its best to deny her the ball by face-guarding her for much of the game. That extra attention on Carnegie, Georgia's leading scorer this season with 18.6 points per game, opened things up for the other players on the floor — Turner and Theuerkauf, in particular.

When asked how she's a different player from last season to this season, Turner said her teammates have made a huge difference. She said "having knockdown shooters" on the floor with her spreads the offensive load around.

"I don't have to do too much," she said. "I just get my teammates open, and they knock it down."

Nobody was knocking anything down early in the game. Before either team had scored a point, Georgia and Tech had a combined eight turnovers. The Yellow Jackets led 16-11 after the first quarter and were up 19-16 when the Lady Bulldogs took over the game.

A Turner basket in transition cut the lead to one, and then Carnegie got a steal and a layup to put Georgia ahead. That was followed by a 16-foot jumper from Turner, a Woolfolk spin move and short jumper, and then back-to-back 3-pointers by Turner to make it 29-19 Georgia. After a Tech free throw, Theuerkauf hit a 3 with 38 seconds left in the half.

On Georgia's final possession of the second quarter, in which the Lady Bulldogs outscored Tech 23-4, Woolfolk rebounded a Theuerkauf miss and got the ball to Turner, who drove for the buzzer-beating bucket to cap the 18-1 run. It was a dominating finish to a quarter that pretty much put the game away for good.

"I'll play with them any day," Carnegie said of playing with fellow guards Turner and Theuerkauf. "I know they get buckets, for sure. Whenever (Tech) face-guarded me in the first half, I know I can trust them to go get a bucket for themselves. And it's a big difference having a lot of guards that can create for themselves."

Carnegie and Turner's scoring totals Sunday were season-highs, as was Woolfolk's 16. If Turner, Carnegie and Theuerkauf can keep making big things happen on the perimeter, as well as by attacking open lanes and in transition, that's only going to help open things up more for Woolfolk in the paint.

"They love each other," Coach ABE said of the guard trio that is averaging 41.9 points per game. "Can you tell? They have so much fun together."

After playing six of their first seven games at the Steg, the Lady Bulldogs hit the road for three straight games. They play Kansas and Butler in the Women's Fort Myers Tip-Off tournament this weekend, and then play at Florida State on Dec. 3.

"Number one, we're going to be road warriors. We've got to really lock in," Coach ABE said. "Number two is that I think we're going to be just a really dangerous team because we have so many weapons."
