Women Qualify Three For Saturday Finals At NCAA T&F Championships

June 07, 2024 | Track & Field

EUGENE, Ore. --- The Georgia women's track and field team recorded three qualifying performances in the semifinal rounds during the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday.

Sophomore Kaila Jackson started the day by registering the fourth-fastest time in the 100-meter dash semifinal to advance.  Then, the Redford, Mich., native earned a spot in the 200m final thanks to a fifth-place finish in the semifinal round.

Kimberly Harris, Haley Tate, Sydney Harris and Dominique Mustin passed the baton for a qualifying performance in the 4x400m relay with the third-best time in school history.  Their time and finish topped a then school record time (3:29.90) that the Lady Bulldogs finished to take eighth in the 2023 semifinal.

Other than the decathlon running Wednesday-Thursday and the heptathlon going Friday-Saturday, the meet is set up to be a men's competition on Wednesday and Friday and a women's competition on Thursday and Saturday.

The Georgia men remain in second place with 13 points behind USC (19).  California (12.5), Kansas (12), Miami (12) and Ole Miss (12) round out the rest of the top six.  Florida (26) leads Nebraska (22), Oregon (15), Washington (14.5) and Rice (14) on the women's side.

On Wednesday, graduate transfer Marc Minichello earned First Team All-American honors for the third time in his career as he collected his second NCAA javelin title (also was the 2022 champion at Penn).  In addition, Alex Kolesnikoff scored for the first time in his career outdoors with a sixth-place finish in the shot put.

Georgia had one individual final qualifier come out of the semifinal rounds on Wednesday.  Sophomore Christopher Morales Williams clocked the fastest time in the 400m with his fourth sub-45 second finish of the season.

When Do The Bulldogs Start Day 3: Sophomore Ella Rush will begin the heptathlon on Friday at 4 p.m. ET as the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m are scheduled.  Rush and the hep field will wrap up the competition on Saturday with the long jump, javelin and 800m.

The open events on Friday will start with freshman Riyon Rankin in the high jump at 9:52 p.m. after arriving in Oregon ranked ninth nationally.  Morales Williams, who leads the nation in the 400m, will race in the final 10:02 p.m.

The Lowdown: Jackson finished second in the second heat and fourth overall in the 100m semifinal after crossing the finish line in 11.04.  She was fourth in the 100m final at the 2023 NCAA Championships.  Less than an hour later, the All-American finished third in the opening heat and was fifth overall after completing half a lap in 22.37.  Jackson will race in the 100m final on Saturday at 6:22 p.m. followed by the 200m final at 7:07 p.m.

Georgia rounded out the day by qualifying for the 4x400m relay final.  Graduate transfer Kimberly Harris, sophomore Haley Tate, freshman Sydney Harris (Kimberly's younger sister) and senior Dominique Mustin combined for a 3:28.29 for seventh place.  Kimberly Harris (team leading 51.99 split) put the Lady Bulldogs into a slight lead after the first lap before Tate widened the gap on the second leg.  After Sydney Harris handed the baton over with her team in second place, Mustin battled for a third-place finish in the second heat, which ended up seventh overall.

The Lady Bulldogs will race in the 4x400m relay on Saturday at 7:51 p.m.

Graduate transfer Erin McMeniman posted the top mark and best finish of her career in the javelin to finish 10th for expected Second Team All-America honors, missing the final by one spot.  She started her series with a mark of 53.32 meters/174 feet, 11 inches to jump from eighth to sixth on the school's all-time list.  The Brown graduate had already posted a previous personal best at the SEC Championships for sixth place a month ago.

In other action Thursday, Kimberly Harris was 12th in the 400m semis, sophomore Aaliyah Butler was 14th in the same race, senior Zoe Pollock managed a 15th-place finish in the 400m hurdles, junior Kelsie Murrell-Ross took 19th at her first Division I NCAA Championships, Dominique Mustin took 22nd in the 400m hurdles and Stephanie Ratcliffe did not have a mark in the hammer throw.
