Georgia Drops Series Opener at Tennessee, 5-1

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The third-ranked Georgia softball team fell in the series opener at No. 6/4 Tennessee on Friday, 5-1.
Georgia falls to 30-7 on the season and 6-4 in SEC play.
Sydney Chambley picked up two hits of Georgia's six hits in the contest. Freshman Emily Digby knocked her fourth home run of the season, a leadoff blast in the fifth inning.
Lilli Backes (12-4) worked three and a third innings in her start, surrounding three runs, one unearned, on three hits. Backes struck out four Lady Vol hitters. Shelby Walters pitched two and two-thirds innings out of the pen, allowing two runs on five hits.
Tennessee (29-5, 9-1) used a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to go ahead 2-0 early in the contest.
The Lady Vol lead was extended on an RBI infield single in the bottom of the third, 3-0.
A two-out two-RBI double off the bat of Zaida Puni widened the Lady Vol lead further in the fourth, 5-0.
Digby broke through for Georgia in the top of the fifth with a leadoff home run, 5-1.
Game two of the series is set for 12 p.m. on SEC Network live from Knoxville.
