No. 6 Georgia Sweeps No. 30 Vanderbilt, 4-0

April 12, 2024 | Women's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. —  The No. 6 Georgia women's tennis team completed its third-consecutive sweep, earning a 4-0 victory over No. 30 Vanderbilt at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday.

The Bulldogs (16-4, 11-1 SEC) now lead the all-time series 39-13 over the Commodores (11-8, 6-6 SEC), winning each of the last seven meetings.

Opening the day with doubles, Georgia jumped out in front to start after securing the early 1-0 lead.

On court two, No. 40 Mai Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant were dominant from start to finish, earning a 6-1 victory over No. 83 Holly Staff and Valeria Ray (VAN).

After the Bulldogs fell on court one, the duo of Anastasiia Lopata and Mell Reasco clinched the doubles point for Georgia with a 6-2 victory over Bridget Stammel and Amy Stevens (VAN), extending their winning streak to five matches on court three.

"I thought today was a great performance from our team," head coach Drake Bernstein said. "Court two doubles put in a lot of work throughout the week, we went through a lot of video, Jarryd [Chaplin] did a great job explaining concepts to them, and he really polished them up to have a great performance today. Court three continues to impress as well. It's just nice to see that doubles work pay off."

In singles, the Bulldogs opened up strong by taking four of six first sets.

Grant struck first for Georgia as she was on the front foot all match long, earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Naomi Katz (VAN) to double the lead for the Bulldogs.

Within a minute, Aysegul Mert pressed her own stamp on the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stevens (VAN), improving to 6-0 in dual singles matches on court five.

With courts two and three both sitting on match point, it was No. 38 Alexandra Vecic who pulled through in the end to earn the match-clinching win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Ray (VAN).

"As far as singles go, I think it's really a solid performance across the board," said Bernstein. "We've continued to work hard throughout the year. We're paying attention to more than just the Friday and Sunday matches. We're really paying attention to our Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. It's just great to see them come and out play free in front of a great crowd and in the tough conditions of the wind today."

Georgia will remain at home for its regular season finale against No. 65 Kentucky on Sunday, April 14 at 1 p.m. ET at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
