ATHENS, Ga. — Led by a runner-up effort by fifth-year senior Caterina Don, the No. 25-ranked Georgia women's golf team finished third in the 52nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Sunday.
The Bulldogs shot 15-over 879 over 54 holes at the University of Georgia Golf Course, while Georgia's B team placed ninth in the 17-team field at 27-over 891.
The Bulldogs trailed Auburn by six shots to begin the day and pulled within striking distance midway through the back nine but could not complete the comeback.
"We got ourselves within three or four with about five holes to do," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We were right there. We've got to learn from maybe why we didn't close the gap the rest of the way. At the same time, we did battle back.
The performance was Don's third second-place individual finish this season and her seventh top-10 in 11 events. For Georgia, the third-place showing equaled the Bulldogs' best performance during 2023-24, matching their efforts in the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club and the FSU Match Up earlier this spring.
"I think it was a great day," Don said. "I actually played really well today, but I just made a couple of wrong decisions. But I'm confident in my swing, and it was a great weekend. I'm excited for the postseason."
"Caterina continues to have a very special year with another second-place finish," Brewer said. "I think she's just saving that first first this season, just like the team, for the postseason. She was trying to win. You don't get many chances. If she wanted to finish second, we could've played it differently."
Freshman Savannah De Bock's even-par 72 led Georgia's A team to a 300 tally on Saturday. The Bulldogs also counted a 74 from Napat "Jenny" Lertsadwattana, a pair of 76s from Don and Natachanok "Drive" Tunwannarux.
The Bulldogs' B squad posted a 301 on Saturday, with contributing tallies of a 1-under 71 by Bernice Olivarez Ilas, a 73 by Isablla Holpfer, a 78 by Celine Brovold Sanne and a79 by Grace Frei.
Following Don on the individual leaderboard for Georgia, Olivarez Ilas tied for 12th at 218, Holpfer tied for 14th at 219, De Bock tied for 18th at 220, Lertsadwattana tied for 29th at 223, Tunwannarux tied for 43rd at 226, Brovold Sanne placed 50th at 228, Song tied for 58th at 231, Cowart tied for 65th at 233 and Grace Frei tied for 71st at 236
No. 10 Auburn earned the team title by shooting 1-over 865, 11 shots better than No. 15 Florida. Trailing the Bulldogs and rounding out the top-10 teams were No. 23 Virginia at 892, Kansas State at 883, Alabama at 894, No. 24 SMU and Augusta both at 890, Georgia's B team at 891 and Illinois at 892.
Carla Bernat of Kansas State won medalist honors after shooting 9-under 207.
Georgia will now prepare for its postseason play in the SEC and NCAA Championships. The Bulldogs will compete in the SECs at Pelican Golf Club on Belleair, Fla., on April 12-16. That tournament will feature three days of stroke play qualifying, with the top eight teams advancing to a bracketed match play championship.
The NCAA Regionals will be held at on May 6-8 in Auburn, Ala.; Cle Elum, Wash.; College Station, Texas; East Lansing, Mich.; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Winston-Salem, N.C. The top six teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif., on May 17-22. Georgia will be looking to record its fourth-straight top-20 finish at the national championships, headlined by tying for fifth in 2022.
