Georgia Sweeps Arkansas, The Citadel in Doubleheader

March 24, 2024 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 40 Georgia men's tennis team won both of its doubleheader matches by sweeps on Sunday, defeating No. 48 Arkansas, 4-0, and The Citadel, 7-0.

No. 58 Ryan Colby earned his second clinch as a Bulldog (10-9, 3-4 SEC) in the team's win over the Razorbacks (14-8, 1-5 SEC). In doubles, Freddy Blaydes and Niels Ratiu clinched the point and notched their highest-ranked win of their careers against Arkansas' No. 29 Božo Barun and Jared Horwood.

"Really pleased with today and this weekend," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "Great step in the right direction. Our guys are really growing and really coming along."

Georgia took the doubles point after locking in wins on courts one and two.

Colby and Thomas Paulsell took the first win from the second position, quickly defeating Connor Smillie and Jacob Sweeney in straight games, followed by Blaydes and Ratiu giving the team the doubles point for the 10th time this season.

In singles action, No. 61 Paulsell took his third conference win on court one with his three-set victory over Barun by a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 score. Ratiu followed No. 61 Paulsell by defeating Melvin Manuel, taking the final four points in his second-set breaker to secure his match, 6-3, 7-6(5).

On court two, No. 58 Ryan Colby quickly followed suit by beating Gerard Planelles Ripoll 7-6(3), 6-3 to clinch the match for the Bulldogs, the fifth clinch of his collegiate career.

"It was kind of a difficult start at the beginning, but we picked it up," said Colby. "It was looking tight for a little bit, but me and Thomas [Paulsell] did a great job of rebounding in the second set for him and in the third, he did well. I clinched a good tiebreaker as well."

The Bulldogs used the momentum from their sweep over Arkansas to propel them into their second match of the afternoon against the Citadel.

The Bulldogs secured the doubles point after earning wins on courts two and three. Davis Taylor and Parker Jacques picked up their first point-clinching win of their careers, defeating Lucas Robins and Noah Van Dyke, 6-4, on court three.

"I'm very pleased, especially with our doubles that continue to be a strength now," said Diaz. "We've got a lot of momentum there."

Georgia stayed in rhythm, taking the first point in singles as Parker Jacques moved to 3-0 in dual match play by beating Lucas Robins in a 6-1, 6-2 decision on court five. Ratiu then grabbed another point for the Bulldogs, getting the win over Teo Cariov 6-2, 6-4, marking the sixth win in his last eight singles matches. Parker Mariencheck secured his first dual match win of his career, knocking off Ted Bagwell 6-4, 6-1 on court six.

No. 81 Miguel Perez Peña landed his first clinching win of the season on court one with a victory over Hayden Shoemake by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Perez Peña's 21st match victory of the season, which ties him with Cyrus Mahjoob for most on the team, helped lift Georgia to a 7-0 win.

The Georgia Bulldogs will return to action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Friday, March 29 against No.16 South Carolina at 5:00 p.m. ET.
