Georgia Sweeps LSU, 4-0
March 17, 2024 | Women's Tennis
ATHENS, Ga. —  Coming off a hard-fought Friday night victory against No. 14 Texas A&M, the No. 10 Georgia women's tennis team carried over all momentum into the end of the weekend as it swept LSU 4-0 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (11-3, 6-0 SEC) have now won nine-straight matches, taking sole possession of the top spot in the Southeastern Conference standings while also sitting as the last undefeated team in SEC play.
With the victory, Georgia now picks up its 50th win against the Tigers (10-6, 2-4 SEC) to lead the all-time series 50-4, winning each of the last 44 matchups.
Starting the day with doubles, the Bulldogs bounced back in the win column to lead 1-0 after dropping doubles points in its previous two matches.
The No. 8 tandem of Aysegul Mert and Dasha Vidmanova dominated from start to finish on court one as they delivered a bagel to defeat Kenna Erickson and Anita Sahdiieva (LSU), 6-0.
On court three, Alexandra Vecic and Mell Reasco found their groove early and never looked back as they clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Gaby Rivera and Maya Tahan (LSU).
"I thought doubles was awesome," said head coach Drake Bernstein. "I thought we've played good doubles throughout the whole year, even on the two that we've lost. I felt like we played good doubles and it was nice to see that go our way on the scoreboard today."
Moving on to singles play, No. 29 Vidmanova kept the momentum going on the Bulldogs' side as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Aran Teixido Garcia (LSU) on court one.
Within a minute across the complex, No. 78 Mai Nirundorn came up big on court six as she made quick work for a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Erickson (LSU) to give Georgia a 3-0 lead.
With close action in the first sets of court four and five, it was a race to the finish between courts two and three.
Ultimately, court two played host to the clincher as No. 25 Vecic capped off the day with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Florentine Dekkers (LSU) to secure the sweep for the Bulldogs.
"I think the team sent a strong message that we're not satisfied, that we're going to keep pushing, everyday we're going to show up ready to play," Bernstein said. "We came out, and even with the doubles point in our pocket, there's still a sense of urgency in singles and I think that obviously showed in the results."
Georgia will return to the road for one match next weekend where it will face off against No. 16 Tennessee on Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m. ET at Barksdale Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn.
