Magahey Wins 500 Free on Opening Day of Fall Invite

ATHENS, Ga. – A plethora of podium finishes marked the first day of competition for the University of Georgia swimming and diving programs at the 2024 Georgia Fall Invitational Wednesday at Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The Georgia Fall Invitational continues Thursday with the 400y individual medley, 100y butterfly, 200y freestyle, 100y breaststroke, 100y backstroke, women's 1-meter, men's 3-meter, 200y medley relay, and 800y freestyle relay. - Graduate Jake Magahey took first in the men's 500-yard freestyle with a B-cut time of 4:11.18, followed closely by sophomore Tomas Koski in third with a new personal-best time of 4:11.96, moving him to fifth in program history. In prelims, Magahey briefly held the nation's fastest time at 4:10.93.
- Seniors Rachel Stege and Abby McCulloh clinched appearances at the NCAA Championships with A-cut times in the women's 500y freestyle. Stege finished second with a season-best time of 4:34.27, while McCulloh set a new PB of 4:36.18. The Bulldogs' distance group continued its strong season with senior Duné Coetzee and graduate Sloane Reinstein reaching the championship final and junior Shea Furse placing 10th with a new PB of 4:39.35.
- The women's sprint group also turned in a strong evening, beginning with an A-cut time of 1:28.01 in the 200y freestyle relay from sophomore Helena Jones, graduate Julianna Stephens, freshman Katie Belle Sikes, and senior Eboni McCarty. Jones led off with a B-cut time of 22.53, while McCarty closed at 21.74. Later in the 50y freestyle, McCarty placed third at 22.33, while Sikes tied for fourth at 22.35 and Jones took sixth at 22.40. Stephens finished 11th with a personal-best B-cut of 22.45.
- Junior Ieva Maluka finished third in the women's 200y IM with a season-best B-cut of 1:56.43. Fellow junior Olivia Della Torre finished fourth with a new PB of 1:57.46. In the men's 200y IM, junior Aaron Seymour placed seventh with a PB of 1:46.25, while freshman Drew Hitchcock won the consolation final with a personal-best B-cut of 1:44.72.
- Sophomore Matthew Bray finished second on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 351.10, followed by junior Renato Calderaro in third at 338.20. In the women's 3-meter, junior Hannah Stumpf finished seventh at 264.30.
- Both of Georgia's 400y medley relays earned B-cuts, with the women's team finishing third at 3:32.49, while the men took fourth at 3:05.94.
