Former Bulldog helps American advance in World Cup
MANILA, Philippines — Anthony Edwards, who won 2020 SEC Freshman of the Year honors while playing for the Georgia Bulldogs, scored 13 points for the USA National Team in its 109-81 win over Greece in the FIBA World Cup on Monday.
Edwards was the first player on the USA roster to reach double digits after scoring nine points in less than a minute. He converted a pair of free throws with one second left in the first half and then knocked down back-to-back jumpers – a 3-pointer and a driving layup – in the first 58 seconds of the second half. Edwards ignited a 15-5 surge by the USA which turned a 48-37 lead to 63-42.
Edwards started the game and also notched three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 20 minutes of playing time.
The USA locked up advancing to the second round of group play with the victory. The Americans defeated New Zealand, 99-72, on Saturday and will face Jordan on Wednesday at 4:40 a.m. ET in the final contest of the initial stage of "Group C" competition. That contest will be televised live by ESPN2.
The top two teams from "Group C" will face the top two teams from "Group D" to set the stage for the tournament's quarterfinals. The second round of group phase play will be from Aug. 31-Sept. 3, followed by the final round of competition from Sept. 5-10.
Edwards was the top-scoring freshman in the nation during his one season with the Bulldogs. The Atlanta native was then the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft. He has emerged as one of the NBA's brightest young stars in three seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading the franchise to back-to-back playoff appearances and earning a spot in the 2023 All-Star Game.
The FIBA World Cup, formerly known as the World Championships, is contested every four years. The tournament is considered the flagship event of FIBA, the sport's world governing body. The USA has won five Gold Medals in 18 editions of the event, last doing so in 2014.
