Welbourn, Korth Named Georgia Gymnastics Assistant Coaches

June 16, 2023 | Gymnastics

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia gymnastics head coach Courtney Kupets Carter has announced the addition of Sam Welbourn and Mollie Korth to the staff as assistant coaches.

Welbourn served as interim assistant coach throughout the 2023 season and will remain on staff. Korth joined the team last year as a volunteer assistant and will be added as Georgia's fourth full-time coach after recent changes to increase staff sizes instituted by the NCAA.

"Sam and Mollie are integral parts of our success, growth and vision for the Georgia gymnastics program and I am so happy they will be remaining on staff, "Kupets Carter said. "Ryan, Sam, Mollie, and I work as a cohesive group and that's extremely important for the success of our team.  We can't wait to get to work on the 2024 season."

The Georgia gymnastics program Improved 10 spots on bars and 10 spots overall in the rankings at the end of the 2023 season from the prior year and the team's 2023 NQS score was the highest in the last four seasons. Welbourn and Korth helped coach Georgia GymDogs to individual awards on a conference and national level in 2023. Five GymDogs received All-SEC honors, which is the most since 2016 and the highest number in one season since 2003. Georgia was also awarded its first WCGA All-American since 2020.

A former gymnast himself, Welbourn joined the Georgia staff after working at Georgia Elite Gymnastics where he served as a Level 10 bars and vault coach. During the 2022 season, Georgia Elite had the second-highest amount of gymnasts attend nationals (15), had a pair of national all-around champions, two national bars champions and the highest number of top-10 finishes of anyone in the country.

Prior to Georgia, Korth, a former stand-out gymnast at Kentucky, spent one year as a volunteer assistant at Pitt after graduating from Kentucky in 2020.  Korth became the third Wildcat in program history designated All-SEC in four consecutive seasons. She also collected three Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association Regular Season All-America distinctions and a selection as one of six finalists for the AAI Award, presented annually to the most outstanding collegiate senior female gymnast in the country. Korth is an 11 All-American in total and a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll recipient after opening her career as the 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year.
