Condon Named Semifinalist For Golden Spikes Award
May 22, 2023 | Baseball
ATHENS-----University of Georgia redshirt freshman first baseman/outfielder Charlie Condon has been named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced Monday.
"Charlie is a hard worker and obviously very talented, and he comes to work every single day," said Georgia's Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin. "You look at him, and he's got the skill set. He was 195 pounds last year when he got to campus. The idea to redshirt him last year was like a football mentality with an offensive lineman where you put some weight and strength on him and see where he goes. If you would've told me he was going to hit 25 home runs, I don't know if I would've believed that. He did everything in the last 365 days to prepare for today. He's a great kid and deserves it."
Earlier on Monday, Condon, a 6-6, 215-pound native of Marietta, Ga., was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. Condon ranks among the SEC leaders in batting (.393), hits (81) and RBI (67), and his 25 home runs this season is an SEC freshman record, breaking the previous mark of 22. Earlier this season, Condon had a 37-game on base streak and a 24-game hitting streak. He also leads the SEC in home runs in conference games this season (16). Also, Condon was named a second team All-SEC selection at first base plus garnered a spot on the Freshman All-SEC team. Condon is Georgia's first SEC Freshman of the Year since the award was added by the league in 2000.
The Golden Spikes midseason watch list was pared down to 25 semifinalists as USA Baseball continues the process of identifying the top amateur baseball player in the nation. The 45th Golden Spikes Award will be presented on June 25 at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN, leading into game two of the College World Series Finals.
Condon is Georgia's first semifinalist since pitcher Emerson Hancock in 2019. Eighteen different universities are represented in this year's semifinalist group. Fan voting will again play a part in the Golden Spikes Award in 2023. Amateur baseball fans can vote for their favorite players on www.GoldenSpikesAward.com, beginning today. USA Baseball will announce the finalists for the award on June 7, and fan voting will continue until June 21.
"As the amateur baseball season enters the home stretch, we are excited to honor this season's top players," said USA Baseball Executive Director/CEO Paul Seiler. "The talent in amateur baseball is as exceptional as it has ever been, and the twenty-five players on this list are the best of the best. We look forward to watching the remainder of the season as we move closer to naming the winner of the prestigious Golden Spikes Award in June."
