SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — Georgia carded a 2-over 290, the third-best round of the 15 team competing in the afternoon wave of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Saturday. The Bulldogs are at even-par 576 and slipped from third to 11th on the team leaderboard at Grayhawk Golf Club as many of the morning teams took advantage of idyllic conditions to post low scores.
"Strangely, it's not what the leaderboard is going to say, but I thought today we showed more grit and grind than we did yesterday," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We were a touch off all day, but we finished really well and it gives us a little momentum going into tomorrow. Now, we're in a good position to finally have our round of the tournament, which a lot of other schools have already done.
"We need to go tomorrow and if the course is set up the same way, be ready to make some birdies," Brewer added.
Jenny Bae paced the Bulldogs with a 1-under 71, again bettering her own school record by posting her 25th par-or-better score of the season. Both Jo Hua Hung and Candice Mahé fired even-par efforts, and Georgia also counted a 75 from LoraLie Cowart.
Bae closed strong, playing the final five holes at 3-under.
"The start was a struggle, but Josh came by and was like 'What's up?,'" Bae said. "He kept me high spirited, and I just told myself 'You only have five holes left. At this point, you have nothing to lose. You have to go up and help the team.' I just tried my best, and I made three birdies."
Overall, Bae is tied for 17th at 3-under 213, Hung is tied for 32nd at 1-under 215, Cowart is tied for 62nd at 146, Mahé is tied for 69th at 147 and Isabella Holpfer, who shot 76 on Saturday, is tied for 102nd at 222.
"It was playing hard this afternoon because the greens were really fast," Mahé said. "A lot of teams went low this morning. Course management is a bit different when you play in the morning and when you play in the afternoon."
No. 2 Wake Forest remained atop the team leaderboard at 17-under 559 after 36 holes. The Demon Deacons lead No. 1 Stanford, which shot 15-under on Saturday, by two shots. No. 4 South Carolina is at 14-under followed by a six-shot gap to No. 11 Texas in fourth. Georgia is one of eight teams bunched together by eight strokes between fourth and 11th.
Following Sunday's third round, the field will be cut to 15 teams for Monday's final 18 holes of stroke play qualifying. Georgia is nine shots clear of that mark at this point.
"You have to make the cut to win a national title but if you're worried about that, you're not going to be winning come Tuesday or Wednesday," Brewer said. "Our goal is to get ourselves in position for that Monday round to get ourselves into match play."
After Monday's round, a second cut will be made for the top-eight teams to advance to a bracketed match play competition to determine the national champion.
Georgia will be paired with New Mexico and Baylor on Sunday, teeing off from No. 10 between 10:27-11:11 am ET. Live scoring is being updated on a hole-by-hole basis at golfstat.com.
