Bulldogs Fall to Aggies 5-2 on the Road

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The fourth-ranked University of Georgia women's tennis team fell to second-ranked Texas A&M 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, in Southeastern Conference action.
In doubles, Texas A&M (21-1, 9-0 SEC) took two of three from Georgia (15-4, 8-1 SEC). On court three, No. 44 Meg Kowalski and Mell Reasco cruised to a 6-1 win over Gianna Pielet and Daria Smetannikov. The Aggies responded taking courts one and two. Despite a valiant effort, Ania Hertel and Dasha Vidmanova fell to No. 46 Salma Ewing and Jaycee Goldsmith 6-4 and No. 31 Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn fell to Mia Kupres and Mary Stoiana 6-3.
In singles play, the Bulldogs won a pair matches. Texas A&M struck first with a straight-set win on court four. Georgia responded with a pair of wins on courts five and six. Kowalski topped No. 101 Daria Smetannikov 6-2, 6-3 and Grant defeated Jeanette Mireles 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 to notch the score up at two all. The Aggies took the lead after No. 8 Lea Ma fell to No. 3 Mary Stoiana 6-4, 7-6(7). The Bulldogs forced third sets on both courts two and three, however, Texas A&M clinched the match in a tiebreaker on court three. While playing it out, No. 10 Vidmanova dropped fell to Salma Ewing in a third set tiebreaker.
Up next, Georgia wraps up its home slate with a pair of SEC matches. The Bulldogs will take on the South. Carolina Gamecocks on Friday, April 7 at 5 p.m. before facing the Florida Gators on Easter Sunday at 1 p.m. Graduate Meg Kowalski and seniors Ania Hertel and Lea Ma will be honored prematch on Sunday during senior day festivities.
