ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 6-over 294 in Friday's opening round of the 51st annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Led by Jenny Bae's 2-under 70, the Bulldogs are tied for fifth place on the leaderboard.
"We would like to have started better," head coach Josh Brewer said. "On your home golf course, you have high expectations because of how much we practice and play here. I think there are some nerves as well because we don't compete against other teams here very often. Overall, we hung in there and rebounded to put ourselves in a very good position to be in contention come Sunday."
Georgia's team total was comprised by Bae's 70, a 73 from Jo Hua Hung, a 75 from Caroline Craig and a 76, the score signed for by both Caterina Don and Candice Mahé. Among the Bulldogs competing as individuals, LoraLie Cowart shot 75, Isabella Holpfer carded a 76 and Céleste Dao notched a 77.
Bae posted her 19th par-or-better score in 25 rounds and moved to a cumulative 32-under this season. She covered the front nine at 1-under. Bae sandwiched birdies at No. 3 and No. 6 between bogeys at No. 2 and No. 8 before training a 40-foot birdie putt at No. 9 to return to red numbers. She also was 1-under on the back side, with additional birdies at No. 12 and No. 15 and a bogey at No. 13.
"I feel like today went well," Bae said. "It was a good first round, a good opening for the Liz Murphey. It kinda went smooth most of the day and then the last four or five holes the went caught on, but I think I managed it pretty well and picked the right clubs.?
No. 10 Auburn blistered the UGA layout to the tune of 11-under 277 to grab an 11-stroke lead over the field. A trio of Tigers – Casey Weidenfeld, Elina Sinz and Katie Cranston – lead a pack of four golfers tied for the individual lead after shooting 3-under 69 along with South Carolina's Louise Rydvist.
For Georgia, Bae is among three golfers one shot back and tied for fifth. Hung is tied for 20th; Cowart and Craig are both tied for 36th; Don, Holpfer and Mahé all are tied for 46th; and Dao is tied for 55th.
Following Auburn, 11 teams are separated by just 10 strokes between second and 10th. No. 21 Florida is second at 288, followed by No. 19 Virginia at 289; No. 4 South Carolina at 290; the Bulldogs and Alabama at 294; Louisville and North Carolina at 295; Arkansas at 297; and No. 9 Texas A&M, Purdue and Charleston all at 298.
Saturday's second round has been pushed back an hour to start at 9:30 a.m. due to the forecast for potential thunderstorms, while Sunday's final round will feature a shotgun start at 8:30. The Bulldogs will be paired with South Carolina and Alabama on Saturday, teeing off from No. 1 between 10:15 and 10:51. Georgia's individual entrants will start at No. 10, with Dao going off at 10:39 and Cowart and Holpfer doing so at 10:48. Live scoring is available on a three-hole basis at golfstat.com.
