ATHENS, Ga. --- Five University of Georgia gymnasts have earned All-SEC recognition, the Southeastern Conference office announced Wednesday.
Haley de Jong, Vanessa Deniz, and Soraya Hawthorne were given All-SEC nods, while Naya Howard and JaFree Scott collected All-Freshman honors. This is the first All-SEC honor for all five GymDogs.
De Jong, a senior from Vancouver, was placed on the All-SEC team for her performance on bars and floor at the 2023 SEC Championship. She scored a 9.900 on bars and floor for the GymDogs on her way to All-SEC honors in those events. She was also named to the SEC Community Service Team, which was announced last week.
Hawthorne, a senior from Memphis, anchored the floor lineup with a 9.900 in the event to come up in a tie for first overall in the afternoon session.
Deniz, a senior from Millstone Township, New Jersey, earned the distinction after a solid performance on beam. She scored a 9.900 for the squad to finish tied for second at the conclusion of the first session.
Howard, a freshman from Chesapeake, Virginia, earned SEC All-Freshman recognition in the all-around after being the top freshman finisher in the first session.
Scott, a freshman from Independence, Missouri, was tabbed All-Freshman after finishing with the top score (9.875) from a freshman on beam in the first session.
The GymDogs will head to Denver next week for the NCAA Regional Championships. Georgia will compete in the afternoon session of second round on Friday, March 31 against LSU, Oregon State, and Nebraska. The top two finishers will advance to the NCAA Regional Finals on Sunday, April 2.
