ATHENS, Ga. --- Senior Haley de Jong of the University of Georgia gymnastics team was named to the Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the conference announced Friday.
An all-round competitor from Vancouver, Canada, de Jong stands out as Georgia's leader in Community Service. As a senior leader of the Georgia GymDogs, she goes above and beyond her call of duty to the UGA and Athens community.
She was a 2021 Georgia Leadership Academy Inductee and is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Over the course of the last four years at Georgia, de Jong has taken advantage of numerous volunteer opportunities, including Gymnastics Special Olympics, Lydia's Place, Athens Boys and Girls Club, the back-to-school event with Howard B. Stood Elementary School, and Operation Teammate.
With the Gymnastics Special Olympics, de Jong worked alongside their coaches, assisting throughout practices teaching gymnastics skills including handstands, cartwheels, swings on the bars and many more in preparation for a competition.
In her work with Lydia's Place, de Jong assisted in organizing clothing and other goods to prepare baskets for students in need and provide resources for their time in college.
De Jong and the GymDogs are set to compete at the SEC Gymnastics Championship at the Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia on March 18. Georgia will compete in the first session, starting at 3:30 p.m. with coverage on the SEC Network.
