HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Georgia women's golf team carded a 7-over 291 in Wednesday's final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs finished play tied for 10th in the elite field which featured six top-10 and 12 top-25 teams.
Georgia climbed as high as seventh on the leaderboard just past the midway point of its round but slipped late in the day.
"We had some really good individual performances, and we had ourselves in position today for a top-5 or top-6 finish and just didn't close it the way we should," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We must learn from it. We continue to get better. That's is a good thing. We just have to eventually close it out and play 54 really good holes as a team."
Individually, Jenny Bae and Caroline Craig led the Bulldogs on Wednesday, with both signing for even-par 71s. Georgia also counted a 74 from Caterina Don and a 75 from Candice Mahé.
Bae finished tied for third individually at even-par 213, five shots back of South Carolina's Mathilde Claisse. Bae has now recorded five top-5 finishes in seven tournaments this season.
In addition, Don tied for 45th at 222, Craig tied for 49th at 223, Céleste Dao tied for 58th at 225 and Mahé tied for 86th at 240. LoraLie Cowart, who competed individually, tied for 66th at 227.
The Bulldogs teed off from No. 10 and played the back side of Long Cove Club first on Wednesday. Bae turned at 2-under following birdies at No. 11 and No. 15. Her front nine was more eventful. Bae bogeyed No. 2 and No. 3 but birdied No. 5 to return to red numbers. She bogeyed No. 5 and No. 8 before a closing birdie put her at even on the day.
Craig birdied No. 10 but bogeyed No. 11 and double-bogeyed No. 12 to fall to 2-over through three holes. She put together four consecutive birdies on her final three holes of the back nine and No. 1 and then birdied No. 4 to move to 3-under. Bogeys at No. 6, No. 8 and No. 9 brought her back to even.
No. 6 LSU closed with a 3-over 287 to pass No. 4 South Carolina and claim the team title. The Tigers wrapped up at 858, four strokes ahead of the Gamecocks. Rounding out the top-10 teams were No. 15 Auburn at 866, No. 2 Wake Forest at 867, No. 8 Texas at 871, No. 12 Arizona State at 872, No. 9 Baylor at 873, No. 20 Vanderbilt at 875, No. 3 Oregon at 877 and the Bulldogs and Duke both at 881.
The Bulldogs will return to action next weekend when they compete in the Clover Cup, which will be hosted by Notre Dame at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. Georgia hopes the trip will be the first of two to the desert this season, as the NCAA Championships will be held in Scottsdale, Ariz., on May 19-24.
