HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Georgia women's golf team shot 9-over 293 in Tuesday's second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at Long Cove Club. The Bulldogs ascended one spot into a tie for ninth with No. 19 Northwestern and Duke in the elite field that features six top-10 and 12 top-25 teams.
"It was a good day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We'd like to have a great day. Maybe we're just saving that for a different time this spring. We moved up the leaderboard, which is always the goal, and we want to go out and do that again tomorrow."
Jenny Bae paced the Bulldogs on Tuesday, firing a 1-under 70. In the process, the super senior from Suwanee, Ga., moved up five spots on the leaderboard to seventh place. She is four shots off the pace of South Carolina's Mathilde Claisse, the individual leader at 4-under 138.
In addition to Bae's 71, the Bulldogs also counted a 73 by Céleste Dao, a 74 from Caroline Craig and a 76 from Caterina Don. LoraLie Cowart, who is competing individually, shot 72 on Tuesday.
"It was nice to see Céleste have what was probably her best round of the spring on a very challenging golf course, and it's good to have to have Caroline back competing and playing well," Brewer said. "Jenny was her consistent self, which we really needed and never take for granted."
Overall, Cowart is tied for 28th at 147, Don and Dao are both tied for 35th at 148, Craig is tied for 63rd at 152 and Candice Mahé, who shot 79 in the second round, is 90th at 165.
Bae enjoyed a steady day that featured 15 pars. She was 2-under at the turn following birdies at No. 3 and No. 8 and posted her only blemish with a bogey at No. 11. In the process, Bae notched her 14th par-or-better score in 20 rounds this season.
No. 4 South Carolina is atop the team field at 1-under 567, four shots ahead of No. 6 LSU. Rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 5 Auburn at 577, No. 8 Texas at 581, No. 20 Vanderbilt at 582, No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 12 Arizona State both at 583, No. 8 Baylor at 584 and the Bulldogs, Blue Devils and Wildcats at 590.
In such an elite field, the Bulldogs will aim to finish within the top 8 on Wednesday, which will carry some significance. The top-8 teams after stroke play at the NCAA Championships advance to the match play quarterfinals to decide the national champion.
"We talk about that all the time," Brewer said. "There are a couple of cuts you want to make every season – to make match play at SECs, to advance from Regionals and to make the cut after three and four rounds at the national championships. We talk about that approach. We want to go out and play as well as we can tomorrow and hopefully put up the number we would need to simulate that result during the postseason."
Georgia will play with the Wildcats and Blue Devils in Wednesday's final round, teeing off from No. 10 in intervals from 11:10-11:50 a.m. Cowart will begin her round at No. 10 at 9:40 a.m. Live coverage on the Golf Channel will begin with the network's College Central show from 2:00-2:30, followed by exclusive coverage of the Darius Rucker for the following two and a half hours each day. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com.
