November 08, 2023 | Football
ATHENS, Ga. --- Bulldog junior Brock Bowers has been named one of nine semifinalists for the John Mackey Award given annually to the nation's top collegiate tight end for the third consecutive season, according to an announcement from the friends of John Mackey Thursday.
Bowers, a native of Napa, Calif., earned Georgia its first Mackey Award last year during the Bulldogs' run to a 15-0 record and their second straight College Football Playoff title. He is the only 2023 semifinalist from the Southeastern Conference.
The finalists will be announced on Nov. 28 and the winner will be announced during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 8.
Bowers is the team's leading receiver this season in only seven games played with 41 catches for 567 yards and four touchdowns. Featuring a career-high 157 yards receiving during the win at Auburn in September, Bowers also has six carries for 28 yards and a score on the ground in 2023. The Lombardi Award semifinalist is currently sidelined with an ankle injury and had surgery on Oct. 16.
The No. 2 (CFP) Bulldogs (9-0, 6-0 SEC) play host on Dooley Field in Sanford Stadium to No. 9 Ole Miss (8-1, 5-1) on Saturday. ESPN will televise the matchup at 7 p.m. ET. ESPN College GameDay will also make its first trip to Athens this season.
