October 04, 2023 | Women's Tennis
Cary, N.C. — Junior Dasha Vidmanova produced a dominant performance to advance as the Georgia women's tennis team concluded the first day of main draw action at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday. Â
The day began with singles action, Vidmanova, who had earned a main draw spot as a No. seed, opened up her tournament with a match against Maria Berlanga Bandera (Tulsa). The Prague, Czech Republic native wasted no time getting ahead as she took advantage early to win the first set 6-3. Vidmanova's dominant start set the tone for the rest of the match as she secured the 6-3, 6-0 victory in straight sets to advance to the round of 16.Â
Junior Mai Nirundorn, who had won six consecutive matches to advance from pre-qualifiers all the way to the main draw, opened her day with a match against Kari Miller (Michigan). The match was competitive from the start as the first set swung Miller's way at 6-3. Trailing for the first time in the tournament, Nirundorn responded immediately with a 6-4 second set win to level the match as one set apiece. In the third set, Nirundorn battled back to keep the set within two games but fell short as Miller took the set and match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.Â
Doubles play took place in the afternoon, as the duo of Aysegul Mert and Vidmanova hit the courts against the No. 1 seed pairing of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty (North Carolina). Mert and Vidmanova opened strong and took advantage to take the first set 6-2 before Brantmeier and Scotty leveled the match with a tight 7-5 second set win. A 10-point tiebreaker to determine the match leaned opposite as Mert and Vidmanova fell short by a score of 2-6, 7-5, 10-5.Â
Across the park, the tandem of Nirundorn and Guillermina Grant opened its tournament with a match against Dana Guzman and Alina Shcherbinina (Oklahoma). Nirundorn and Grant searched for a spark after trailing early but the first set slipped away at 6-2. Fighting to come back from a set down, the opposition closed in late and took the second set to win the match 6-2, 6-2. Â
Vidmanova will return to the court for her round of 16 matchup against Dana Guzman (Oklahoma) on Thursday at 10:45 a.m. Â
