STANFORD, Calif. — Junior LoraLie Cowart fired a 2-under 69 to lead the No. 23-ranked Georgia women's golf team in the opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate presented by Condoleezza Rice on Friday. The Bulldogs shot 16-over 300 as a team at the Stanford Golf Course and are tied with No. 12 San Jose State and Colorado in 16th place in a stacked field featuring 11 top-25 teams.
"LoraLie played really well today," head coach Josh Brewer said. "She's had a great fall. Really, she and Caterina (Don) have shown up for us in every round this fall. Caterina was a touch off today, but I'm confident she'll bounce back from that. I'm happy for both of them for the fall they've had to this point. It would be nice to see them finish it off with solid rounds tomorrow and Sunday."
Cowart recorded her seventh par-or-better tally in 10 rounds this fall, covering the front side of at 1-over before playing the final nine holes at a 3-under clip. She began her day with a trio of pars before a birdie-2 at No. 4. Back-to-back bogeys pushed Cowart to 1-over. She notched red numbers on three of the first four holes after the turn to move to 2-under before a bogey at No. 14. She regained that stroke with her fifth birdie of the day at No. 16 before closing with a pair of pars.
Georgia's other counting scores on Friday included a 74 from Don, a 77 from Isabella Holpfer and an 80 from Kate Song. Celine Brovold Sanne shot 81, the Bulldogs' drop score.
Overall, Cowart is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard, four shots off the pace of first-round leader Zoe Campos from UCLA. Don is tied for 51st, Holpfer is tied for 79th, Song is tied for 95th and Brovold Sanne is tied for 98th.
"This weekend is an amazing opportunity for some people in our lineup," Brewer said. "I think they recognize that, but they need to take advantage of it. We'll try to put a better foot forward as a team the next two days. If we're able to do so, we'll end the fall with momentum and more like the way we've played in our first three tournaments."
No. 7 UCLA grabbed the lead in the team field. The Bruins' 10-under 274 is five strokes clear of the field, with No. 11 Southern California in second at 279.
Georgia will be paired with No. 21 Arizona and Oregon State for the second straight day on Saturday. Those teams will tee off in waves beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET. Live scoring is being updated on a hole-by-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
