October 13, 2023 | Women's Tennis
Florence, S.C. — Playing her third match in as many days, sophomore Alexandra Vecic battled in her most competitive match as a Bulldog, falling just short in a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) loss at the ITF Florence 25K singles quarterfinals on Friday.
Coming off victories against Layne Sleeth in the first round on Wednesday and Gabriela Lee in the second round on Thursday, Vecic was slotted to face off against Whitney Osuigwe in the quarterfinal on Friday.
In the first set, both players split the opening two games before Vecic sparked momentum and jumped out in front to lead 4-1. Osuigwe provided a late effort with consecutive close games, but Vecic pulled away to close out the first set 6-2.
In the second set, both players picked up on an even start as Vecic held on to a short 3-2 lead before momentum flipped and Osuigwe took the set 6-3.
With the match leveled at one set apiece, Vecic took part in her most competitive set yet. The third set opened up to an exchange of games won, leading up to a 4-4 draw at the midway point of the set. Vecic pushed out in front and held a brief 5-4 lead before Osuigwe managed to tie the set at 5-5. After forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6, Vecic battled to keep up with the opposition late but fell just short as Osuigwe took the final set 7-6(5).
The Georgia women's tennis team will resume its fall schedule as it prepares for the ITF Macon 80K set to run from Oct. 16-22 in Macon.
